Someone is SIX!

14902847_10154662283029282_510529638418060289_oSo sad that we don’t keep up with this blog much anymore, but if there’s ever a reason to update, Ruby’s sixth birthday is a good one!

14947870_10155006273908676_8469247392275690557_nWe kept tradition alive and combined trick-or-treating with birthday cupcakes this year. It’s funny, when I found out my due date was 10/30, I was always so worried that her birthday would be overshadowed by Halloween. Ironically, Halloween is Ruby’s favorite – and she loves that it falls so close to her birthday on 11/2. She went as the Childlike Empress from The Neverending Story this year – her favorite movie (at least until Harry Potter came along …) Her dad was THRILLED. He also made her headpiece, sourced the dress and whipped up the tulle cape. Pretty rad Dad, huh?

img_9323So yeah, Harry Potter. Cut to her actual birthday where she woke up and opened presents with us, all of which were Harry Potter themed, and then we did her annual birthday interview.

Instead of a birthday party, she chose to go to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios instead. We had a great time – Ed + I can’t even remember the last time we went to Universal, and it was really fun experiencing something new at a theme park. We tried our first Butterbeer, did some magic spells and even rode a roller coaster. It was only $10 more to get a 9-month pass, so we will definitely be going back a bunch more!

Roadtrippin’ thru Utah – Snapshots of Salt Lake City

After 4 days of glorious natural wonders, the Kims needed a little civilization. The novelty of nature trails had started to wane for poor little Ruby, and if Ed + I didn’t get some ethnic food into our bellies we were going to go insane. So we trekked up to northern Utah to see what the fuss about Salt Lake City was all about. The drive was long, but pretty – the white, snow-capped mountains with matching puffy white clouds along the way didn’t get old, but a stop at a McDonald’s indoor playground for an hour or so was still necessary to let Ruby climb, play and make a new friend. We ended up rolling into SLC in the late afternoon.

Anxious to get our bearings, we decided to walk to the City Library to explore. It was a win-win, Ed + I were floored by the architecture, and Ruby got to squeeze in some much-needed storytime.

We walked a bit more, grabbed some Vietnamese food for dinner, splurged on THE BEST frozen custard EVER, and ended the evening with a short drive to see a bit of the city by night.

More pics here.

We’ll see what SLC has in store for us tomorrow!

Christmas 2013 Highlights

As usual – we had a great Christmas! We feel so fortunate to have wonderful family to celebrate the holidays with. We hosted Christmas Eve at our house for Ed’s side of the family, and we were especially thrilled that Auntie Shannon could join us! It was a cozy evening of good food, great company, cookie decorating, and of course – a few presents. :) We kept things casual this year and went with paper plates! But I still made special place-setting favors like I do every year — it’s tradition!

An 80 degree Christmas Eve at The Kims

All ready for dinner!

Mommy made a trifle!

Love for Halmoni!

Cookie decorating time – everybody got into it!

On Christmas Morning, Grandma + Papaw arrived early to watch Ruby open presents. Looks like Santa made it to our house this year – thank goodness for that key!

She asked Santa for a Sofia the First Doll for 2 months straight, grateful he came through .

Ruby gave a few gifts, too…

After a bit of relaxing, we headed to Grandma + Papaw’s to spend the day. Unfortunately, not too many pics captured there, but lots of memories were made for sure! Dad made his mini sugar fest cakes (!) and Mom made the traditional family favorite, Ribbon Salad. A sweet way to end an epic day!

This is my favorite pic with the best gift of all …

Merry Christmas 2013! More pics here.

Songs We Liked in 2012, and Our Favorite Three Albums This Year!

A new year calls for some reflection, and we like to do that by reflecting back on some of our favorite songs. As usual, we both compiled a mix, and we love sharing them. Please feel free to download both mixes at the links below, or visit our tunes page (you can grab past mixes from years before there, too!)

We aren’t saying these are the best songs of the year, we’re just saying these were the songs we loved. Most of them were released in 2012, with exception of a few that we either just discovered or never really got into until this past year. There is some artist overlap (hey, we’re married – we like some of the same things), but I assure you, they are two completely different mixes. Hope you like them!

Our Favorite Albums

We both agreed on our Top 3 albums this year … and we’re willing to share!

lonerism#1: Tame Impala – “Lonerism”

We couldn’t wait for the second Tame Impala album to come out this year, and when it got here it didn’t disappoint. It’s a play-through. Listen to the whole thing!

Jack-White-Blunderbuss

#2: Jack White – “Blunderbuss”

A no-brainer, especially if you know about Carrie and her obsession, er — respect for Jack White. Admittedly, the album is all-over the place, but it’s still a huge favorite. Ruby can even sing along to all of these tunes, too.

brianAufheben

#3: The Brian Jonestown Massacre – “Aufheben”

This album was a big surprise this year and one both Carrie and Ed spent a lot of time with. It’s a great album to put on while you’re working on something. It’s very atmospheric and pretty wonderful, actually. We’re sorry we don’t have this one for download, but just sign up for Spotify and check it out — you won’t be disappointed.
