Tennessee Super Kitschfest! Day 3, DOLLYWOOD

We finally made it to Dollywood! No pictures can properly do it justice!

Dolly is even running for President apparently!

Ed + Ruby almost took off on the tour bus …

But we got to take a tour inside, so we didn’t miss out by not going on the road. We saw her private room, where she wrote songs, and even a retired wig that is no longer in the rotation …

I thought about picking up an outfit …

But decided against it.

Ruby had a great time at the park with Cousin Kay + Grandma …

…and running through the mister and hanging out on Daddy’s shoulders, too!

Speaking of Daddy – he couldn’t get enough pork rinds

And Ruby devoured beans ‘n’ greens …

Lots to see on the grounds, everything from a replica of her childhood home, to her outfits on the sets of 9 to 5!

It was a pretty awesome day — props to Dolly for one heck of a theme park!

p.s. Did you know Dolly knew Andy?

Tennessee Super Kitschfest! Day 2, Roadtrippin’ to Pigeon Forge

Today was another whirlwind of a day, this time we drove 3.5 hrs east of Nashville to Pigeon Forge. The main reason for the trek is to visit Dollywood (which we’re doing tomorrow), but today was full of more fun Southern surprises. We were very grateful for a sticker book during this long drive — it kept Ruby busy!

Since Dolly herself is from Seviersville, which is in the Smoky Mountains, we decided if we really wanted a different experience, we’d rent a cabin in the Smoky Mountains instead of a regular motel on the Parkway. Boy are we glad we did! It’s just too bad that we don’t have more time here … there is an enclosed porch with a swing, a hot tub, a full kitchen, a whirlpool bath tub and a jacuzzi! We could easily stay a week here, it’s very quaint and peaceful.

After getting settled we met up with our Michigan relatives Kay + Dave, and had a Southern style dinner at Huck Finn’s. This place was COUNTRY: the menu lists “fixins” and “vittles”. Dad even ordered Fried Frog Legs, and I saved enough room for Banana Pudding!

Now it’s bath time and off to bed to be ready for a BIG dose of awesome kitsch overload at Dollywood tomorrow!

Tennessee Super Kitschfest! – Day 1, Arriving in Nashville

Oh, Nashville – we’ve only just arrived, and we heart you already. We got into town at about 6pm, and immediately hit up downtown to get a taste of the city. We knew it was gonna be kitschy, but you know what else it is? Full of heart! Whether its the people singing their hearts out at karaoke, the peeps who own the most amazing (real!) record shops I’ve seen, or the folks working at the boot store, these people love their city. It’s contagious.

So maybe you say Nashville’s not for you ’cause you don’t dig on country music. Well, the truth is trying to categorize country music as one genre is a major fail. I don’t dig on Kenny Chesney, Garth Brooks or Faith Hill either — but I love me some Pasty, Loretta, Hank and Willie! Nashville is full of nostalgia and big time homages to Country Music legends of yesteryear. Ernest Tubb record shop had us in awe — its an amazing place, and there are so many signed pics of celebrities in there that I could’ve stayed all day.  When we found Ernest Tubbs, this was exactly what we had in mind when planning our trip here. Pardon the crappy picture, but there was no way I could pass up a photo with a real authentic autograph by Patsy Cline herself. This place was a great place to hit up to get us acclimated to Nashville right off the bat! (Oh, and thanks to Ernest Tubb’s, we just might have found tix to a Tammy Wynette tribute show on Tuesday when we get back – YES!)

We are loving all the awesome signage and kitschy cowboy shops too. Even though Ruby looks cute in a cowboy hat, I don’t think we’re ready to commit – but is it bad I kinda want a pair of boots? We had a chance to window shop at several great shops on Broadway … here are a few highlights:

And then of course, the three of us had to take over the Grand Ole Opry …

We’re headed out to Pigeon Forge in the morning (Dollywood awaits!), but we’ll be back in awesome Nashville on Tuesday. Until then, Music City!

Tennessee – Day 1

Super-Kitschfest 2012!

We are headed off for Tennessee to have the most over-the-top vacation to date — we’re headed to Dollywood, Graceland + Nashville! Yep, all those things and more in one vacation … we can’t wait! Less than 48 hours, and we’ll be arriving in Nashville…

Stay tuned … we’ll be blogging along the way (we think!), just like the good ol’ days. Bring on the BBQ, Patsy Cline Impersonators and the Fried Peanut Butter and Banana Sandwiches!

Off-roadin’

A few weeks ago, Ed + I got to attend our 1st automotive press event together! We got invited to Calamigos Ranch in Malibu to go check out the entire Jeep lineup and spend some time behind the wheel. As Jeeps are known first and foremost for their off-roading prowess, we even got to take them on a trail and really put them to the test!

The 4-door Wrangler was pretty awesome, and I couldn’t deny how fun it was to drive. One of the auto journalists there gave me my 1st off-roading lesson and even though I was TERRIFIED to do it, it ended up being really awesome! You can see that I am a little tentative here … afterall, at one point I was facing straight down and they told me no gas and no brakes, just let the Jeep crawl! Well, it did … and it was exhilarating … and I kinda can’t wait to do it again! The best part was being able to have Ed as my drive partner. Maybe we will be the “Automotive Power Couple” that everyone jokingly calls us.

I can’t help but laugh when I see myself in the Jeep … this is so not my scene!

Someone had brought an old Jeep to the event and Ed + I couldn’t help be in awe of the retroness of its styling. We wouldn’t mind rocking one of these on a day trip either!
