Miami in Food

Miami sure did not disappoint when it came to food either. We we lucky enough to catch some really great restaurants while we were there, and we definitely enjoyed all of the dining experiences! This time around, we hit up some real fancy stuff, but as they say – When in Rome, do as the Romans do. After all, Miami is one of the most hedonistic places we’ve ever been to…unlike Southern California where many people are low key about how much they’ve got, in Miami they flaunt it loud and proud and make no apologies.

First stop was the Blue Door at The Delano Hotel. Going to this restaurant really piqued our interest because The Delano Hotel was designed by Phillippe Starck (we’re both big fans). When we visted another Starck-designed hotel, The Clift, when we were in San Francisco last May, we were thouroughly impressed, so we had to see what The Delano was all about. It turns out Madonna used to own the restaurant until recently – which totally made sense when we saw how glamorous the joint was. Anyway, we both agreed that the atmosphere was a 10, the presentation of the food was real fancy and deserved at least an 8, but overall, it was a little over the top, even for us foodies. We were glad we went, but we enjoyed seeing the hotel more than our meal.

Fancy dining room details.

Pretty appetizer. In laymen’s terms: Crab, Guacamole, something spicy, with a shrimp on top.

Because the hotel is so amazing, and we wanted to gush over Phillippe Starck, here are some pro pics we grabbed from the website, as our pics didn’t do the place justice!

The next day, we had to bring it back down to earth and enjoy the fine Cuban food we’d been so excited about ever since booking the trip. We were directed to La Carreta by a friend of Ed’s, and this was it. One of the best and most favorite meals of the trip! The kitsch factor of the building itself only added to the experience, complete with wagon wheel decor and old cuban men drinking cuban coffee outside, debating politics. This branch of La Carreta was in the heart of Calle Ocho, the heart of Cuban Miami. Showing that price has nothing to do with goodness, this was also the cheapest meal of the trip at about $25 for the both of us, including a beer for Ed. Ed had the best ropa vieja he’d ever tasted (the flavor was indescribable), while Carrie had the tastiest mahi mahi she’d ever eaten. Apparently everyone eats at Versailles, but many locals and those in the know swear by La Carreta.

As with all of our vacations, we always visit a classy place that we can enjoy a fine steak dinner. Prime 112 was the perfect place for us, as it’s a self-proclaimed “Modern Steakhouse”.

This was a pretty landmark meal for both of us as we got an appetizer that wasn’t exactly what we expected…it contained ingredients that each of us considered verboten…it had raw yellowtail (Carrie won’t do raw fish) and raw onions and tomatoes (no friggin way for Ed). But you know what? It was friggin delicious. All these ingredients, as a composition, made for amazingly bright, summery, yet savory flavors that truly got our palates ready for the perfectly cooked steak to come. Goes to show what being flexible will get you!

Our steaks were perfect, and the sauteed spinach was the best ever!

YUM.

And finally, we splurged once more and hit up Yuca on Lincoln Boulevard. This was a very upscale place, specializing in Latin Food. They had THE BEST mojitos we have ever tasted. EVER.

The food was delicious – (look at all those colors!) this is what our langostinos with plantains looked like:

Our very last meal was lunch at the 11th Street Diner in South Beach. Yep, all good things must come to an end, and nothing sounded better before hopping on a plane for a long ride home than a good solid burger. The 11th Street Diner is an interesting piece of history. It was actually a pre-fab aluminum diner that was in Pennsylvania for 48 years, then dismantled and brought to South Beach back in the early 90s. Very deco in form and detail, it looks for all the world like it was made to be in SoBe (as the locals call it). Anyways, it was a good, solid greasy diner – Carrie had a regular burger with her favorite crinkle fries while Ed had a disgusting sounding (but delicious) variation of the same – the Pizza Burger!

When you think about it, it’s no wonder Miami is the foodie paradise that it is. Combine a vibrant, tropical, celebratory attitude with a lust for decadence and opulence, and you’re gonna end up with some pretty amazing food. It’s yet another reason why we’re committed to going back to Miami!

Go Mom!

Everyone knows about Ed’s mom’s way with people and the impact that she’s made on so many people through her work at the Stramski Center, a part of Miller Children’s Hospital in Long Beach. Tonight, she was awarded with the very prestigious Geraldine A. Stramski Spirit Award – and she and her associates on the Cleft & Craniofacial Team were recognized in a big way tonight by the Steel Magnolias at their huge annual gala.

This was the real deal – a fancy black tie affair complete with silent auction and martinis that flow through ice blocks!

We had the pleasure of spending the evening with a bunch of family and family VIPs. Ed’s mom, Ed, Carrie, Shannon, Ed’s aunt and uncle, Elder Yang (a dear dear friend of Ed’s grandmother), and Ed’s mom’s best friend Kathy and her husband were all present.

Ed is real proud of Mom!

Us and Elder Yang!

Carrie and Shannon

It was awesome to see Ed’s mom get this recognition – she got some good screen time on the short movie they made about the honorees, and her acceptance speech was wonderful – plenty of people complimented her on her words afterwards and she was quite an eloquent speaker!

Way to go mom! We’re so proud of you!

Some more pics from tonight…

Uncle is at his post capturing every moment!

We won carwashes tonight at the silent auction!!

…and now for something completely different!

Today was truly a day of epic proportions! After a full day of Kendall and Jordan, ages 9 and 7, we took on Mikayla and Ethan, ages 5 and 4. And what a fun, full day it was…and a completely different experience!

We started off the day driving to Balboa Island, taking the Jeep on the car ferry across Newport Bay. Even Carrie, who like Ed had lived in SoCal all her life, had never been on the ferry before. Basically, you drive your car on the boat and the boat does the rest of it for you. The kids got a kick out of being on a boat…in the car!

Believe us, Ethan was enjoying it way more than he looked like in the pic.

Afterwards, lunch at Ruby’s and a carousel ride…

So what next? Nothing could have prepared us for just how much wetness was about to ensue….behold Castle Park: home of the water cannon bumper boats! Carrie was perhaps the smart one, staying off the boats. Ed, on the other hand, got a thorough soaking along with Mikayla and Ethan!

After taking the kids to see Ratatouille (grown-ups, especially you foodies out there, see this one. We’re serious. Best Pixar movie yet…especially for grown-ups), dinner proved to be fruitful, with Ethan even learning to write his own name!

Now we’re home, and both Mikayla and Ethan have taken to Sophia…they both learned quickly to be gentle with her, and Sophia returned the favor with lots of love.

Great day…it was a trip too because people really seemed to think Mikayla and Ethan were ours…they certainly could pass for them, couldn’t they?

We’re gonna miss all four of the Facey kids so much!

Fun in your own backyard

What a Saturday it was for us – our dear friends Kristen and Steve got married and of course that meant it was a big day. Today was therefore a perfect day for a chill day of experiencing the unfamiliar familiar.

After all, with a sweet new test car from work (and therefore free gas – thank god since we recorded an abysmal 14 mpg for the trip – YOW!), why not? We present the 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited! Ed has loved these since they came out and today was a perfect day for some top down cruisin’ down PCH!

Yes, we’ve lived here all our lives and have been down this road before, but it’s been a loooong time and we’ve never done this drive together. But you know, rediscovering something familiar IS a lot of fun. Especially when you’re experiencing it together for the first time. We started our mini road trip at Bolsa Chica and just headed on south, taking in the scenery. Southern California beaches really are beautiful and for all the griping about real estate prices and the cost of living, well…we guess this is why!

We think we’ve broken down what each of the major beach areas represent. Huntington is a pretty laid back surfer town, albeit with a lot of tourists. Newport is incredibly wealthy – lots of orange skinned long blonde haired middle aged ladies with shih-tzus and leopard print pants driving Escalades. Laguna is genuinely pretty, with a borderline bohemian feel in parts. Dana Point is just kinda there, and finally San Clemente (which was actually new for both of us) was really nice, with a nice pier, a good restaurant on the pier, and a lively yet relaxed atmosphere. For all the talk of Orange County’s homogeneity, we certainly saw a lot of different faces of OC beach life.

Anyways, it was the perfect summer day in the perfect summer car. Proof that you don’t have to always travel far to experience something new! It’s often all about the context.

The end to a perfect weekend!

After many hours on the road, we’re too tired to write a whole lot but man, what a great weekend it was! We took a completely different way back home, taking the 166 through a podunk town that time forgot called Cuyama and down the 33 through Ojai. Driving up to Morro Bay yesterday was all about ocean views and mock-Danish villages, but today was all about isolated plains and grand mountains. And we do mean isolated….we’d go for miles without seeing any sign of life! We went from the most John Steinbeck-ish moments…big rusted tractors and roads lined with orchard trees…to curvy, pine tree lined mountain roads…and back again to the coast! It was hard to believe we were in California the whole time!

Just a few pics of the signage we captured today (Carrie’s got a thing for cool signs):
