Obama lands in Long Beach!

Carrie and I had heard in the news yesterday that Obama was coming to Southern California today. This morning, I heard that Air Force One was going to be landing at the Long Beach airport! As fortune would have it, I had to be at Toyota HQ in Torrance at 2 today to pick up a test car, and Obama was to land at 3! Talk about the stars being aligned.

It was a truly festive scene there. There were many places one could watch from; I chose the airport fire station parking lot, which was packed but had a great view of the runway.

And there he is…a little speck on the horizon.

Touching down!

And a nice landing amidst deafening cheers, whistles, and applause.

Talk about brightening your day! See all of the pics by clicking below.

Ed’s visit to Shannon and Mani in San Rafael

Thanks to Toyota, who flew me up to Napa to drive the 2010 Prius, I was able to spend the weekend visiting Shannon and Mani in nearby San Rafael in Marin County. This was the first time I’d seen the new place as they had moved there from Santa Cruz back in late November.

To make a long story short, we had a wonderful time. The new house is really adorable and Shannon has (as always) put her signature thumbprint on it. It’s located walking distance to downtown San Rafael, which is filled to the brim with amazing restaurants and pubs, and just a few minutes to nearby San Anselmo (which I fell in love with) and Fairfax (another neat little town with a somewhat younger vibe). All three cities are surrounded by greenery and all boast wonderful food and retail with a refreshing freedom from chains and franchises.

Here’s Spirit on one of our many walks to downtown. Since he has three legs and is getting older, bringing the wagon’s a necessity for when he gets tired. Honestly, he seems to love the wagon rides!

One of the culinary highlights was Sol Food, a Puerto Rican restaurant that is locally renowned and one of the most popular joints in town. It was amazing – and I’m sad to report I was so engrossed in the food I forgot to take pics. I’m sure the Puerto Rican community might take issue with this statement, but it seems to bear much similarity to Cuban food, which I love as well.

Here’s the new place! Cute, huh?

The best meal of the trip was the dinner Shannon cooked up last night: a noodle soup with wontons and a make-your-own spring roll bar! WOW. Bravo, Shannon!

Hurley’s in Napa Valley

Ok…I’ll preface this by saying that this was easily the superior meal of the two dinners on this trip. Hurley’s ended up being directly across the street from Bardessono. I don’t know where to start…but wow!

So the meal started off with the most awesome butternut squash and mushroom risotto. This was easily the best risotto I’ve ever had. And that’s saying something because I like risotto in general and I’ve certainly had some great ones. This one had a richness and slight saltiness to it that was very hearty, yet I never got the upset heavy food stomach that I usually get after eating a rich risotto. Bravo – this is a must-have for any risotto lovers who visit Napa.

The next course was equally memorable. The wilted spinach salad had sun dried tomatoes and a sherry bacon vinaigrette. Oh. My. God. I could have eaten two servings of this. I love spinach anyways, but the vinaigrette really did have this hint of bacony goodness that just made this salad come alive. Seriously, one of the best salads I’ve had in a very long time. That’s saying a lot considering our recent trips to Tender Greens.

And the third course? I chose the Oakwood Grilled Mid-Western Grilled Rib-Eye. It was truly a sorted steak, as the English might say. The meat literally seemed to dissolve on contact and was extraordinarily juicy. The creamy potatoes and leeks on the side were equally impressive. Creamy and rich, but not stomach-ache inducing. And the asparagus…perfectly cooked in what was obviously some very high quality EVOO. I wish I had a true foodie’s vocabulary to describe just how perfect this seemingly Plebeian dish was….its perfect execution made it sublime.

The dessert was a martini glass with pear and tangerine sorbets. Anyone who attended our wedding knows we’re a fan of yummy things served in martini glasses. The sorbets were a perfect palate cleanser…despite the heavy meal, I left Hurley’s in anything but a food coma.

I recommend Hurley’s to anyone visiting Napa. It just makes me know that Carrie and I are going to have to come back up here for a truly Epicurean weekend experience (hopefully with Wade and Brittany!). I just barely scratched the tip of the iceberg here!

Bardessono in Napa Valley

I got to travel to Napa Valley for the media launch of the new 2010 Toyota Prius. I can’t talk about the car yet as all photos and driving impressions are embargoed until next month, but I can definitely talk about the food! This review is the first of two – it’s the in-house restaurant at the Bardessono, an eco-chic hotel that just opened up earlier this month in Yountville, about 15 minutes north of Napa.

The hotel is fantastic. It’s modern, contemporary, and very, very green. It’s made of recycled and reclaimed materials, much of the power comes from photovoltaic panels on the roof, and there is all kinds of smart technology that keeps energy consumption at a bare minimum. Some of the power even comes from geothermal sources under the hotel!

Anyways, our press corps ate the first night at Bardessono’s restaurant. As you’d expect, almost everything in the menu is organic, and where possible, ingredients are locally sourced. I love this kind of stuff.

And what did we eat? Well, it was a set menu for us media. We started off with a Star Route Farm Salad. I forgot to take a picture because I was so hungry I forgot! Anyways, it was relatively simple with little gem lettuce, winter chicories, macadamia nuts, and a red wine vinaigrette, but the freshness was very apparent. I don’t know how else to describe it. It was truly refreshing and delicious.

So, the next course was my favorite: Hook and Line Atlantic Cod. It has a crispy skin, brandade (a puree of cod, milk, and olive oil), and was bathed in a lemon caper brown butter sauce. Oh yes. Melt in your mouth kind of delicious. Obviously not locally sourced, but who cares? It was the bomb. The skin added a nice crispiness without the sort of nasty fishiness that some fish skins impart. And that butter sauce was sublime.

The third course was Watson’s Napa Lamb. Regrettably, I ate most of it before I got around to taking the pic. It was braised in curry and coconut and had cocnut basmati rice on the side. I actually usually dislike lamb, and I would say this dish would have tasted great to the lamb lover. Again, the quality was apparent, but I just don’t like the gamey flavor. As you can see, I didn’t finish it. I lapped up everything else though!

Finally, dessert was a Chocalate Caramel Tart with a salted caramel ice cream. Wow. Caramel ice cream…. Not much I can say about it except that it truly was delicious. It really refreshed the palate after that lamb and finished off a great meal.

Tonight, we eat at Hurley’s Restaurant. Stay tuned!

Jedi Jordan’s 9th Birthday!

There are few movies I love more than Star Wars, so hearing the news that my niece Jordan wanted to have a Star Wars birthday party got me truly elated beyond all imagination. But I never expected just how amazingly elaborate this party would be! This party was truly one for the books. Before I go any further, we have to give serious kudos to Shirley for handmaking all of the costumes (yes, really!), Lora’s sister for doing all of the face painting, and Eric for really going the extra mile in terms of getting into the spirit of things (you’ll see in a bit).

So to start things off, here’s a huge 3D Star Wars movie theater poster from the theater that Eric and Shirley both worked at back in the ’90s. Eric saved it, probably not knowing just how handy it would come in years later!

And here’s me with the birthday girl, Jedi Jordan Facey, age 9! Can you believe the costume?

And all of the Facey kids and Taelor! How awesome are these costumes! We’ve got Mikayla as ’70s Princess Leia, Ethan as a clone trooper, Ella as Queen Amidala (SOO cute!!), Taelor as a Jedi, and of course Jordan as the bravest Jedi in the galaxy! And then below, Kendall as Padme.

All of the food was linked to Star Wars in some way. This was one of our favorites: Vader’s Veggies. Don’t you dare even think about not eating your vegetables!!

And no Facey birthday party is complete without one of Larry’s amazing cakes. He just keeps outdoing himself!

We were amazed. EVERY kid came dressed up to the nines! I mean, look at this!! It was so amazing that I had to run to Target to get myself a Star Wars shirt – after all, how could I – a true Star Wars geek – NOT dress up in at least some way?

I unfortunately got gored by Darth Maul (Megan)!

But the biggest surprise of all was when Darth Vader himself arrived!!!

Jedi Jordan did a fine job fighting off the dark side of the Force.

I, unfortunately, didn’t fare so well.

Happy birthday, Jedi Jordan!!!

Many, many more pics here! We encourage you to check them all out; there are some really great ones in there!
