Introducing Jimmy Kim!

We are so excited to have a new member of our family — Jimmy Kim came home with us today from the OC Humane Society in Huntington Beach and we are so lucky to have found him. He is sweet, gentle and super handsome. He is a big boy — 14 lbs. and 9 years old. He is super affectionate for having been with us less than 12 hours so far. After losing Ricki almost a year ago now, it feels great to have a cat in the house again.

Blissed out on head scratches:

He is so tolerant and good with Ruby:

We love him so much already!

RIP Ricki, 1996-2014

After 17 years of a life well-lived, we said goodbye to our kitty Ricki on Friday. I had originally rescued her in 2001; at that time she was already 5 years old, and the rescue group told me they’d picked her up in an alley behind a seafood restaurant in Long Beach, where she’d been living off scraps the workers would leave out for her. It had taken them over a year to find her a home, and she found that home with me.

The first few months I had Ricki, I barely saw her. She’d hide all day, and the only proof I had that she didn’t leave the premises was her food bowl was empty each morning. She was very skiddish, she was spooked by any noise, and she did not want to be held – ever. I had even gone back to the man I’d adopted her from, worried that she didn’t like me and I wasn’t a good fit for her. He advised me to be patient (not a virtue of mine), be gentle (also not my biggest strength) and to just try talking to her while I was in the house so she’d get used to hearing my voice and not be startled by it.

His advice worked. I would come home from work and just start talking a little bit. I’d open up a bag of cat treats or wet food and place it just within poking reach of the furniture or shelf she’d be hiding under. I started to increase the distance, and she’d slither out, look at me, gulp it down and retreat. But after a month or so, one night she decided to venture out — and she stayed. From that point on, she became the most loyal and devoted cat I could’ve ever imagined. And of course, when Ricki + I moved in with Ed + Molly, we all became a happy family in 2006.

Ricki lived with us for 13 years. She’s lived with us in 7 different places. During that time, she shared a home with two other cats … and a baby. We were amazed at how tolerant she was of Ruby … she never showed any resentment towards her and she often hung out right by her side when she was an infant, keeping watch. She stayed calm when her tail was pulled, her fur was grabbed or chubby cheeks were curiously crammed next to her face.

Almost a year ago, our trusty veterinarian, Dr. Toledo (who has seen us through three cats and performed not one — but two! — knee surgeries for Ricki) let us know that she was suffering from kidney and thyroid disease. He warned us that we could make her comfortable, but these were things that just could not be cured. She held on awhile, but this past Wednesday she had a kidney infection that was too brutal to beat. We decided after all this time, we now had the opportunity to let her go in peace.

I am grateful that we could all go and say one last goodbye to Ricki as a family before we let her go. It’s a strange feeling to return to a house with no purring in it. But no matter how sad we may be, we know we’ll always have our wonderful memories with her. RIP, Sweet Ricki.

Christmas 2013 Highlights

As usual – we had a great Christmas! We feel so fortunate to have wonderful family to celebrate the holidays with. We hosted Christmas Eve at our house for Ed’s side of the family, and we were especially thrilled that Auntie Shannon could join us! It was a cozy evening of good food, great company, cookie decorating, and of course – a few presents. :) We kept things casual this year and went with paper plates! But I still made special place-setting favors like I do every year — it’s tradition!

Mommy made a trifle!

Love for Halmoni!

Cookie decorating time – everybody got into it!

On Christmas Morning, Grandma + Papaw arrived early to watch Ruby open presents. Looks like Santa made it to our house this year – thank goodness for that key!

She asked Santa for a Sofia the First Doll for 2 months straight, grateful he came through .

Ruby gave a few gifts, too…

After a bit of relaxing, we headed to Grandma + Papaw’s to spend the day. Unfortunately, not too many pics captured there, but lots of memories were made for sure! Dad made his mini sugar fest cakes (!) and Mom made the traditional family favorite, Ribbon Salad. A sweet way to end an epic day!

This is my favorite pic with the best gift of all …

Merry Christmas 2013! More pics here.

Lots of time in the PriusV!

After our three days in Columbus, it was off to Toledo and time to get ready for both the Rickard reunion and Facey reunion. More to follow!

Michigan/Ohio Trip 2013, Days 2-3

The past two days have been a whirlwind of great times with family. So much in fact that I have neglected to take pics of people! :( Today was a low key day with Mom and Dad, driving through Dexter and Ann Arbor. I got to catch a few views of my beloved red barns, we found an incredible park to play at, and Ruby had her 1st Zingerman’s sandwich!

We even got to have a date night with Rachel + Brian while my parents stayed back to watch the kids! It was so much fun to hang out with them that I forgot to take any pics!

Yesterday was equally as great. Mom, Dad, Ruby + I spent the day in Tecumseh with dear cousin Kay and Dave. It was a wonderful day — Kay made her amazing sausage gravy and biscuits for me and we celebrated Dave’s birthday with cake! We had a blast visiting most of the day and then we headed out to Adrian to place an order at my cousin’s pizza shop so we could bring pizza to the reunion on Saturday. Then, we were off to Deerfield to spend the evening with Wes & Brenda and the family! We had fresh sweet corn that was delivered from the farm that morning, delicious veggies and beef sandwiches and some super scrumptious desserts! We loved seeing everyone and the highlight of the evening was Wes busting out his guitar so Ruby could get her 2nd private concert! Ruby was just as enchanted with the music as she was the 1st time we visited in 2011 and she was just 9 months old.

Loving this time with family … leaving Michigan and off to Ohio tomorrow!
