Visiting Shannon in Santa Cruz: Days 1 and 2

This past Sunday Ed took a road trip to visit Shannon in Santa Cruz. She and her boyfriend Mani left the rigid confines of South Orange County about a year ago for the forested wonderland that she had dreamed her entire life of living in. Shannon and Ed have always been very close, so it was hard to see her leave but at the same time Ed knew this was a step she just had to take!

So, on with the show:

On the road northwards.

Cowschwitz, as Ed likes to call it. This is along the 5 freeway somewhere in the vast Central California valley. Sometimes you gotta remember where your meat comes from.

Arriving in Santa Cruz! It sure is green and pretty up here.

This is Ed at a really pretty tea club that Shannon and Mani frequent. It’s very chill and you go in and just strike up conversation with whoever’s there. You pay a monthly fee and go as much as you want. The tea was really delicious.

More detail shots of the tea club. All of the woodwork is reclaimed from trash, demolished buildings, etc. worldwide. Cool, huh?

Shannon and Mani’s house! It’s up in the hills overlooking downtown Santa Cruz. It’s a guest house on a large 5 acre property.

Another shot of the property…the house in the background is the main house where the landlord lives.

Spirit, Shannon’s dog that bit Ed’s neck two years ago. He’s definitely getting older. He struggles a lot more when he walks or runs (he has three legs). Hey dawg, Ed forgives you now.

Shannon playing dog soccer with Spirit and her landlords’ two dogs, Yogi and Eepo. These dogs are adorable. Eepo (the Lab) never runs out of energy though!

Mani’s old diesel Benz! Ed has always loved there cars. He plans to convert it to run on veggie oil. Ed loves it.

Shannon’s landlord built this treehouse for his kids. It totally rules.

This is Ed doing his best Risky Business impression on Shannon’s slippery floors.

And then, Ed made his first sushi for their picnic lunch! Ed officially knows how to make sushi now!

Hiiiiiya!!!

The three of them then went to Santa Cruz’s famous Mystery Spot. It supposedly has all kinds of bizarre things going on that makes physics not apply. In reality, it’s all probably a play on angles and optical illusions. No matter, it was a TON of fun for $5.

Ed’s best Matrix impression:

Trippy:

Shannon looks like she needs to be exorcised here!

Afterwards, the three of them picnicked in town by a surf spot. It was mindblowing – these are “average” waves in this spot and they were huge by Southern California standards. These waves crash right into rocks and the rocky bluff Ed was taking these pics from. These guys have WAY more guts and skill than Ed will ever have! Ed wants to live!

All the while, the sea lions were barking away!

After lunch, Ed, Mani, and Shannon took a leisurely bike ride through town (well, skateboard ride for Shannon).

We’ll post today and tomorrow’s pics soon!

This one’s for you, Dad!

We are so embarrassed at our tardiness on posting Father’s Day ’08 with the Facey’s pictures! We took Carrie’s dad down to Laguna Beach for lunch at Las Brisas. It’s a beautiful place with delicious food! So delicious in fact, that we forgot to take a lot of pictures! As you can see, between the scenery and the colorful drinks, it was easy to do …

A margarita for everybody!

Enjoying the view!

A perfect day to be in Laguna Beach!

Afterwards, we had to take them to Sprinkles – they’d never had a Sprinkles cupcake before, and that just needed to change! Mom had the Ginger-Lemon, Carrie had the Cinnamon Sugar, Ed had the Strawberry, and Dad had their famous Red Velvet!

Love ya, Dad! We didn’t forget about you!

Mmmm…mmm…Canter’s.

It’s been way too long since we’ve been to Canter’s Deli on Fairfax, but when Carrie’s mom requested lunch there for a post-Mother’s Day celebration, we were all over it. Happy belated Mother’s Day, Mom!

Fun Canter’s facts:

  • Over 4,900 lbs of Pastrami are sold per month.
  • There are 1,500 gallons of Chicken Soup made per week.
  • 4,000 Knishes are baked per week.
  • Seating capacity is 465 people.
  • Canter’s Delicatessen is 14,000 sq ft, making it one of the largest delicatessens in the country.

An homage to Canters, one of our favorite time warps:

The Michigan Cousins Meet Los Angeles

This week, Carrie’s cousins Parisa & Sahra came to visit during their spring break. We had an awesome time hanging out, and we had to show them Los Angeles as best we could.

We started things out first with a trip to Sprinkles in Beverly Hills for adorably delicious cupcakes. What’s more LA than paying $4 for a cupcake?

Next, we drove down Rodeo Drive to see the bling in person, and then stopped by The Standard Hollywood (one of our favorite spots) for lunch.

We decided to work off the treats with a lengthy shopping session on Melrose for some cool LA shopping, and then of course we had to hit up Grauman’s Chinese Theatre for the touristy stuff!

But … the highlight for ALL of the girls definitely was hitting up Kat Von D’s tattoo shop, High Voltage Tattoo, which is the shop on TLC’s famous TV show, L.A. Ink!

We all were pretty starstruck at the shop, despite the fact that no one on the show was actually working there that day. The shop also seemed a lot smaller in person! We did spot Kat’s sister, but that was about it. No ink for any of us, but we still left happy – Carrie & Sahra bought T-shirts and of course, we got many cheesy pics out front!

All in all, it was a good week, and we’ll be sad to see them go tomorrow. Our last hurrah tonight was at Pinkberry, for stylish frozen yogurt! Good times!

Happy Birthday, Mom!

Yesterday we had a very special luncheon to celebrate Mom’s Birthday (which is on March 3rd). We wanted to make it as special as she is, so we went to a beautiful restaurant in Topanga Canyon called Inn of the Seventh Ray. The restaurant is gorgeous, all outside, next to a creek. It was the perfect place for her. Our pictures of the place couldn’t do it justice, so we grabbed a few from the web:

The food was delicious too – and afterwards, we had to celebrate with a little birthday cake. You’re never too old to blow out the candles and make a wish!

Our gift this year was to make a book for her. Our goal was to compile as many pictures of significant moments in her life as possible. We found quotes appropriate for each decade and wrote a forward to the book. It was a wonderful experience for us both going through the photos and learning so much about her life – and we were so happy that she loved the book too.

Overall, it was a wonderful day spent with our family! Happy, Happy Birthday to you, Mom!
