Foodcation Highlights

Okay, so this is sooo belated, but if we don’t stop posting around here with nothing but Baby updates, people are going to revoke our thosecoolkims license. So, here are a few highlights from the epic FOODCATION we took with Brittany & Wade to celebrate Wade’s 40th Birthday! 2 days in Wine Country, 2 days in San Francisco, and many, many Michelin-star restaurants!

While every single meal we had was simply fantastic – both Ed & I probably agree that our meal at Ad Hoc was the most special somehow. Being that it was one of Thomas Keller’s restaurants makes it very special on its own, but the concept of the place was so warm and inviting. As described on the Ad Hoc website:

The building at 6476 Washington Street was originally intended to be a very different type of restaurant. While we were designing it we thought we’d experiment by opening a temporary restaurant and calling it Ad Hoc, which literally means, “for this purpose.” The idea for Ad Hoc was simple – 5 days a week we’d offer a 4 course family style menu that changed each day, accompanied by a small, accessible wine list in a casual setting reminiscent of home.

Casual and reminiscent of home is exactly what it was. We felt right at home as the servers brought out plates and plates of family-style food. As there is no menu, you literally just get whatever is being served that evening. We really lucked out! Our night was Surf-n-Turf night! Check out all of this meat and lobster!

Also what made things very special is that Thomas Keller has his garden directly across the street from his three restaurants on the street. We literally saw chefs outdoors, picking ingredients from the ground, and going right back into the kitchen to serve them. Our first course at Ad Hoc was a salad served with all produce from the garden! It was amazing to eat something so fresh & natural – it was definitely much more special than a usual salad! We walked the grounds after our meal reveling at each thing we saw growing that we had eaten just hours before!

Another very special meal was at Redd. Redd is the very best in “California Cuisine”.  A sleek modern setting, a very fun and varied menu and the perfect afternoon to dine al fresco made this a wonderful lunch! Brittany is modeling her gorgeous plate of Pot Roast and I am thrilled with my mini Chinese-style Pork Buns!

Of course, it wouldn’t be a trip to wine country without a wine tasting! Here is Ed looking dapper at Terra Valentine vineyards!

We finished off our time in Napa at Thomas Keller’s other restaurant, Bouchon.

Leaving Napa was difficult to do, but fortunately we had a lunch at The Slanted Door to look forward to! The Slanted Door has the very best in Asian Fusion cuisine! It was the best I think we’ve ever had!

It was a legendary meal, we just kept ordering food, and they kept bringing out other things they thought we’d enjoy. We felt like rockstars throughout the meal. We can’t wait to return!!!

Later that evening, we celebrated Ed’s birthday the way he wanted to celebrate it – at an East German restaurant! Everyone knows Ed’s obsession with all things German, but Walzwerk was special because it contained all of the old-school East German communist kitsch that Ed can’t get enough of! The posters, the dishes … everything about the place made you feel like you were in Berlin, circa sometime in the late 60s-early 70s. Anything for the birthday boy!

Another foodie stop in SF is none other than the Bi-Rite Creamery.

It just so happened we weren’t far from there after dinner at Walzwerk, so we headed over to try out some of their famous flavors! At Bi-Rite, they’re known for unusual ice cream such as Salted Caramel, Honey Lavender, Balsamic Strawberry and Earl Grey! There was a line wrapped around the corner when we arrived! Being the ice cream enthusiast I am, I wish I could’ve tried them all, but I went with the Salted Caramel and the Malted Vanilla with Peanut Brittle. YUM!

The finale was the big dinner at Hubert Keller‘s restaurant, Fleur de Lys for Wade’s actual 40th birthday. We are all big fans of Chef Keller – he’s been seen a lot as a guest judge on Top Chef, and he also was a finalist in Top Chef Masters.

This was a pretty fancy place, and needless to say, it was a little too fancy for me to bust out my camera at the table! So, there’s not any pics. We had a 4-course menu, and everything from the presentation, to the service, to the food was spectacular. Unfortunately, it doesn’t bode well for blogging purposes – but it was an experience that just can’t be explained! We are grateful to have gone and will remember it as a very special evening always!

I think this wraps up our highlights! We didn’t eat for about a week afterwards, but it was absolutely worth every bite!

The Great FOODCATION of 2010!

About 6 months ago, we were having dinner with our dearest friends, The Hammonds, and we were talking about Wade’s big 40th Birthday that was coming up this year. Wade and his talents are no stranger to our blog – not only is he one of our fellow 4 Foodies, he’s also a self-taught gourmet chef who has prepared many amazing meals for us! (Check out his incredible skills on the Summer Tasting Menu he prepared, as well as Brittany’s Birthday Truffle Dinner!) He came to the conclusion that there was no better way to bring in his 40th year than to head up north to both Napa & San Francisco to eat at some of the best Michelin-star rated restaurants possible! Lucky for us – we were invited! We happily accepted and thus began the planning for a most epic adventure – The Great FOODCATION of 2010.

Wade planned out a great itinerary … here are the places we’ll be visiting:

As you can see, this is no regular vacation! Ed and I decided this is the last time in a long, long time we’ll be able to do something this decadent, so we’re going for it!

Our first two days will be spent at the Glen Ellen Inn, which turned out to be super awesome! For just $129/night, we got hooked up with an incredible room! Here are a few photos of our “Secret Cottage” we borrowed from their website:

DSC04788This Saturday was a very exciting evening for Ed & I – we ate at Craft in L.A.! For those of you who may not know, Craft is one of Tom Colicchio’s restaurants – and Tom Colicchio is the head judge on Bravo’s Top Chef!

As a huge fan of Top Chef, when Ed told me he was taking me there on Saturday night I could hardly contain myself! Of course, it’s a popular dining establishment sought out by many other Top Chef fans, and we knew it would be good. But we had no idea how outstanding our experience there would be! Ed even claims that our meal was the best meal he has had all year – and that’s saying something! The ambiance is modern, but warm … the food is quality exemplified … and the service is incredible. It was a fine dining experience that felt casual somehow. It was sophisticated and rich, but not stodgy or formal. We can’t stop thinking about it!

craftLosAngelesWe did get a nice surprise right off the bat … after getting our drinks, our server came out with an Amuse-bouche! It was a Gruyère cheese puff pastry of sorts. I was so in love with the fact that I was somewhere that actually served an amuse-bouche that I didn’t mind handing it right over to Ed. (The world would be so much easier for me if I just enjoyed cheese … but I digress … )

At Craft, you are encouraged to order one starter, one main course and one side dish per person to get the true experience! The portions are individually sized, but they are served in the center of the table family style so you can share with your companions. This was great news for Ed & I, because we always want to try as much as possible! So we perused the menu and had the difficult task of narrowing things down enough to place our order!

As usual, it was extremely difficult to get good pics of the food due to the (beautiful) ambient lighting, but we began with the roasted Octopus (on the left) and the roasted Quail. Ed absolutely loves octopus, and this dish was outstanding! It was served with diced pineapple and a sauce that I can’t remember. I’m not usually the one on-board the octopus train, but I thought this was DELICIOUS! So delicious in fact that I thought the octopus far outshone the quail. This isn’t to say the quail wasn’t yummy, but wow – that octopus was something special…

DSC04801We both ended up choosing fish for our main courses. I opted for the Alaskan Halibut & Piquillo Pepper and Ed went for the John Dory (on right). The halibut cannot be explained with words! It was the most tender piece of halibut we’ve ever had, and the roasted red pepper on bottom was sweet and meaty and essential to the brilliance and simplicity of the dish. The John Dory was a nice contrast because the fish was light, flaky and ever so buttery, but it was sprinkled with a few slivers of olive, which gave it an exciting salty kick. The dishes aren’t prissy or fancy at Craft, everything is just so simple and fresh, but that’s truly what makes everything so amazing. Our sides were roasted pee wee fingerling potatoes and brussel sprouts with bacon. Again, the family style service is perfect because it encourages sharing. I have been craving more brussel sprouts ever since!

DSC04805As if all of the above wasn’t satisfactory enough, we knew we had to order dessert. Come on, how could we not see what they had to offer?!? :) So after checking the menu, we decided on a Hazelnut Waffle with braised apples and cinnamon ice cream. However, we had no idea that there was another treat coming … these tiny panna cotta cups with fresh berries arrived at our table just minutes after we ordered our dessert! Then, even more bite-sized treats appeared at the table! A teeny plate arrived with a tiny fudge brownie, a candied pineapple square and a miniature coconut macaroon. Serious attention to the sweets were being showed, and I have to admit, I wasn’t complaining!

And finally, as if it couldn’t get any more extravagant, these two Cranberry Orange muffins perfectly packed to be sent home with us came out “for breakfast the next morning”, compliments of the pastry chef. AWESOME!

All in all, it was a perfect evening … we can’t wait to go back again, with lots of people, so we can try even more! This was absolutely a culinary paradise!!!

Las Vegas … in food!

Ed & I braved the crowds and headed out to Las Vegas this Memorial Day weekend. We have to say, a big motivation was all of the great food we’ve been hearing about, and we decided it was time to make the trek. We are pleased to report that it definitely lived up to the hype – we were very impressed. We felt like we barely made a dent in all there is to offer there! Guess that means we’ve got reasons to go back!

MESA GRILL – CAESAR’S


We got right down to business shortly after arriving by hitting up Bobby Flay’s Mesa Grill at Caesar’s. Ed & I are big Iron Chef America fans, and we have watched – and salivated, over many dishes we’ve seen Bobby “throwdown” on TV. With his specialty southwestern style cooking, he creates a lot of what our Southern Californian palates crave … bold, spicy flavors and ingredients like chiles, avocados and beans. We were really excited about having lunch at Mesa Grill, and weren’t disappointed.

We began with the Tiger Shrimp + Roasted Garlic Corn Tamale with Corn-Cilantro Sauce. This appetizer tasted just as good as it sounds! We were so eager to gobble it up, that we forgot to take a photo first! Delightful in every way.

The menu all looked so good, that Ed and I opted for the Prix Fixe Lunch. We ordered opposite selections from each other so we could (literally) try it all! Here’s how it all went down:
First Course:
Green Pea + Green Chile Soup
Crispy Serrano Ham + Mint-Cumin Crema
OR
Blue Corn Pancake
Barbecued Duck + Habanero Chile-Star Anise Sauce


Ed chose the Pea Soup, and this was the highlight of his meal. Even I had to admit it was incredible, and I am not usually a fan of Pea soup! How it had so much flavor was beyond me … this dish was a 15 out of 10. Perfection.


I chose the Blue Corn Pancake with duck. It was very bold, and extremely flavorful … but ended up being a little rich for my tastes.

Second Course:
Pulled Pork Sandwich
Chipotle-Molasses BBQ Sauce, Cole Slaw + Bread and Butter Pickles
OR
Grilled Sea Scallops
Blue Corn Tortilla, Avocado Relish + Jalapeno Pesto


Ed chose the Pulled Pork. We’d have to say it was a little light on the chipotle, and a little heavy on the molasses … it was very sweet!

I chose the Scallops, and this was so delicious I don’t even have words! Actually, I do: JALAPENO PESTO. Yes, please!!!

The third course was an espresso flan … we spaced and didn’t get any pictures of that one! All in all, Bobby didn’t let us down. Our lunch was fantastic!

TAO – THE VENETIAN


On Friday night, we visited Tao at The Venetian for one of our favorite cuisines – Asian Fusion. The menu is very inticing, and the decor is incredible! It was extremely dark, and my pics didn’t quite turn out … so I “borrowed” a few from the web:

As you walk in, the entryway is lined with bathtubs filled with rose petals and water … true rose water!

The food was amazing … we had a little of everything. Lobster wontons, Yakitori swordfish, asparagus tempura, kung pao chicken and a veggie roll. We’d say that the food was about a 8 out of 10 … but we enjoyed it immensely. The highlight was definitely the Lobster Wontons.

BEIJING NOODLE NO. 9 – CAESAR’S


The next day, we had an awesome lunch at Beijing No. 9, which is easily the highlight of our trip. It had it all … real, authentic chinese food that was fresh and not greasy! The noodles were hand made, the dumplings were hand rolled – it was casual, but stunning, all at the same time.

Okay … we went nuts over the decor of this place. We can’t help it, when it comes to a restaurant, the ambiance matters to us – and boy did this place have style. The entrance is lined with goldfish tanks … the walls and ceiling are covered in this lacquered white cutout pattern … and the hostess wears a 60s airline stewardess-type dress that’s orange. It’s AWESOME.


Needless to say, we fell in love with Beijing No. 9.

FIX – BELLAGIO

Last but not least, our final hurrah was at Fix in The Bellagio. Fix is classic American food, done very, very well. We were drawn to look of this place of course, but once we peeked at the menu, we knew we had to dine there! We started off with Pineapple Mojitos, shared a delicious Rock Shrimp and Red Pepper appetizer with amazing chile sauce, and shared that evening’s special – a steak for two. It was awesome … the selection they gave us was cut so that half of it was porterhouse, the other half a filet mignon. With two sauces to choose from (a red wine reduction or white peppercorn), we had lots of options in how we wanted to enjoy our meat! But truth be told, it was prepared so deliciously, we didn’t even use the sauces. It was excellent. But there was absolutely no room for dessert after that one!

All in all, we’d say we are now completely satiated – this was hedonism at it finest, folks!

Hurley’s in Napa Valley

Ok…I’ll preface this by saying that this was easily the superior meal of the two dinners on this trip. Hurley’s ended up being directly across the street from Bardessono. I don’t know where to start…but wow!

So the meal started off with the most awesome butternut squash and mushroom risotto. This was easily the best risotto I’ve ever had. And that’s saying something because I like risotto in general and I’ve certainly had some great ones. This one had a richness and slight saltiness to it that was very hearty, yet I never got the upset heavy food stomach that I usually get after eating a rich risotto. Bravo – this is a must-have for any risotto lovers who visit Napa.

The next course was equally memorable. The wilted spinach salad had sun dried tomatoes and a sherry bacon vinaigrette. Oh. My. God. I could have eaten two servings of this. I love spinach anyways, but the vinaigrette really did have this hint of bacony goodness that just made this salad come alive. Seriously, one of the best salads I’ve had in a very long time. That’s saying a lot considering our recent trips to Tender Greens.

And the third course? I chose the Oakwood Grilled Mid-Western Grilled Rib-Eye. It was truly a sorted steak, as the English might say. The meat literally seemed to dissolve on contact and was extraordinarily juicy. The creamy potatoes and leeks on the side were equally impressive. Creamy and rich, but not stomach-ache inducing. And the asparagus…perfectly cooked in what was obviously some very high quality EVOO. I wish I had a true foodie’s vocabulary to describe just how perfect this seemingly Plebeian dish was….its perfect execution made it sublime.

The dessert was a martini glass with pear and tangerine sorbets. Anyone who attended our wedding knows we’re a fan of yummy things served in martini glasses. The sorbets were a perfect palate cleanser…despite the heavy meal, I left Hurley’s in anything but a food coma.

I recommend Hurley’s to anyone visiting Napa. It just makes me know that Carrie and I are going to have to come back up here for a truly Epicurean weekend experience (hopefully with Wade and Brittany!). I just barely scratched the tip of the iceberg here!
