Halloween 2013

Halloween was a blast this year with the crew as usual. Ruby was excited to put the Word Girl costume back on and she definitely couldn’t get enough of trick-or-treating! These kids ran to every house, and Ruby’s bag was practically dragging on the ground because it was so heavy, but she kept insisting that it “wasn’t full!”

These guys had the routine down this year for sure.

Look at the difference from last year. (We missed you this year, Violet!)

However, even with all the candy she got, her Halloween basket from Halmoni was still the favorite. Inside the basket were a bunch of amazing things, but the absolute best was the new Tallulah book! This girl LOVES the Tallulah books. Ruby is so obsessed with ballet these days, and our little ballerina practically has the two Tallulah books she has memorized. Thank goodness Mom + Dad have a new one to read – we’ve practically got them memorized, too!

Finally, I was feeling a little guilty that we are just doing a small family birthday party this year, so I decided to make some mini almost-birthday cupcakes to celebrate, since some of her buddies were here tonight. After trick-or-treating, we all had a cupcake bite and sang Happy Birthday to our girl.

All in all, it was a great night. Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween

Last night we headed off to the Arzate’s annual Halloween Party. Each year, the party gets better and better. The kids all get along so well and now that they’re getting older, they are really into dressing up! Ruby has been excited about being WordGirl (from PBS Kids) since the summer, so we made her costume (actually, Daddy made most of it!), and she kept it on ALL NIGHT LONG!

Everybody got into the spirit, and they even made “Mummies in a Blanket” and Crescent Roll Fingers with “Bloody” (Food Colored almond) Fingernails!

Ed + I went the cheesy clever route, and went as “The Appetizers”.
Introducing Pig in a Blanket and Deviled Egg!

Things get meta: Pig in a Blanket eats Pigs in a Blanket!

Transformations after dark!

We look forward to more fun on Halloween night when the gang comes to our house for Trick-or-Treating!

Happy 4th, 2013!

Today we spent the 4th as a family — just the three of us. We also did three things we love to do: drive, eat and hang out in L.A. With a Fiat 500c convertible that was perfect to cruise in, we were everywhere from Huntington Beach to Artesia in the morning/early afternoon, and then we headed to the Grand Park in Downtown L.A. that evening for some quality time in the best splash pad ever and to catch a fireworks show!

Here are a few snaps from our day:

Fathers Day 2013

Answers by Ruby (are underlined).

We had a great time celebrating the best dad in the world this weekend! Ed woke up and got to enjoy his very favorite Weisswurst sausages for breakfast — with sweet mustard, of course — straight from Bavaria, thanks to Andreas, who is visiting us from Germany. Ed couldn’t have been happier.

After breakfast, we headed out to the Concours d’Elegance in Beverly Hills. Each year, they close down Rodeo Drive, line it with expensive, unusual and exotic cars, and allow for some serious oohing and ahhhing for those of us not in the 1%! It was a blast.

Since we were right around the corner, we decided we had to take an ice cream break, and headed over to  Ice Cream Lab. They make the ice cream right there in front of you. Since we couldn’t decide on one flavor, the four of us shared four different kinds. It was perfect!

Afterwards, we decided to head over to Amoeba to get a little record shopping in, and since Andreas mentioned he still hadn’t had an American burger yet on his visit (we’ve been filling him with Mexican food!), we decided he had to experience Umami Burger. As you’d expect, it went over very well!

Ed said it was a great day, so we consider our celebration of the world’s greatest dad a huge success!

We proclaim Parents Day!

So with Ed’s big 40th falling on Mothers Day this year, I gladly forfeited celebrations so we could focus on his big milestone. Then, we found out a very good friend will be visiting from Germany and staying with us during Fathers Day weekend, and although he probably wouldn’t mind celebrating what a great Dad Ed is with us, we thought it would be better to just combine the two into our own holiday this year. So this Sunday, June 8th, we celebrated Parents Day.

To start things off, Ed totally surprised me with an awesome turntable and a set of 3 re-issued Sun Records 45s by Third Man Records! I was completely stunned and speechless after receiving this gift. I had NO IDEA this was coming (he told me no gifts!) and I am so incredibly excited to finally start a vinyl collection! It’s going to be pretty cool that Ruby will grow up knowing what a record is, too.

We kinda lagged on getting out of the house because we were listening to records, and by the time we headed out for lunch, Ruby crashed out in the car. So we went to our favorite Taqueria, ordered burritos, and ate them in the car while Ruby slept. It wasn’t fancy, but it was totally delicious.

After Ruby woke up, we went to our favorite coffeeshop in the LBC, Berlin, and sat outside while sipping on cappuccinos. Fingerprints Music is right next store, so I also got a chance to browse the vinyl! When I found this Patsy Cline LP, I knew it would be the perfect inaugural purchase for me!

So while it may not have been a typical Mothers Day/Fathers Day celebration — it was a day having fun with our little family of three. It was perfect!
