The Halloween Crew

Mason, Violet, Ruby, Berlin, Harper + Drew

This year, everybody came over to our house to trick-or-treat down our street and to hit up the free carnival at the park at the end of our block. We managed to get a pic of all the kiddos before the madness began. So hard to believe how much they’ve all grown in just a year.

Last year, Ruby wasn’t even walking … this year, she walked up and down the street and all the way to the park and back!

She had fun with Papaw

Ruby + Drew pretty much held hands all night

And Halmoni came along for trick-or-treating, too!

And yes, she enjoyed her 1st lollipop. Look at that face!

She sure has changed a lot since last year!

Happy Halloween!

Halloween Costumes of 2012

We went to The Arzate’s Annual Halloween Party last night and had a BLAST. The kiddos and adults all dressed up … and we did a terrible job of taking pictures! Everybody will be coming here on Wednesday to trick-or-treat on our street, so hopefully we’ll get more pics on  Halloween! Here’s what we did get:

Ruby as Olivia (she’s obsessed with the books!)

Carrie as Rosie the Riveter

And Ed rocking “Gangnam Style” as PSY

My Second Father’s Day!

Sometimes I still can’t believe I’m a dad.  And it feels surreal that Father’s Day, a holiday that I’d observed all my life to honor my dad, is now MY holiday.  So what did we do on MY holiday?  We had fun.  LOTS of it.

Everyone knows that I live and breathe cars, but a lesser known fact about me is that I love to use alternate forms of transportation whenever I get the chance.  I also love to eat.  So, what did we do as a family for Father’s Day?  Well, we did both – and LOTS of it too!

We started off the day with an epic (for us) family bike ride (there’s our first alternate transportation for the day).  We had recently gotten a bike seat for little Ruby, who now pines for any chance she can get to go on a bike ride.  Carrie did some research to find the best breakfast burrito (my favorite breakfast food by far) within biking distance.  A joint called Golden Eagle seemed to have some serious cred, so that was our destination.

As you can see, I loved it…but Ruby, a big fan of tortillas herself, wasn’t going to leave without getting a bite for herself.

No doubt, it was a tasty burrito.  Big and tasty.  And fortunately, all that biking took the guilt out of eating such a decadent burrito.

After riding home, it was time for the next leg of our epic Father’s Day.  For a long time, we’ve wanted to get a ride on the Long Beach Aqualink, which is a fairly large catamaran that transports passengers along the city’s coastline.  It’s actually part of Long Beach Transit and costs a paltry five bucks for a really great 35 minute ride from Alamitos Bay to Shoreline Village.  Our second form of alternate transportation of the day, then!

Some awesome shots of the ride, including this awesome one of Carrie’s feet in a very Wes Anderson-like composition:

We had every intention of riding the boat back to Alamitos Bay, but a few minutes after getting off the boat and walking through Shoreline Village, it was quickly apparent Ruby wasn’t feeling well.  Yep, Ruby had gotten seasick!  So, we picked up our third form of alternate transportation in the form of the Passport bus.  Ruby was into it.  She insisted on getting her own seat.

We thought about calling it a day after this already epic journey.  Most sane parents would have.  But we decided to press on.  After all, I also happened to be lucky enough to be testing a 2012 Chrysler 300C that weekend – one of my favorite cars at the moment and in my possession!

Thanks to a recent episode of No Reservations about the food scene in Penang, I’d been craving Mee Goreng, a spicy fried noodle dish popular in Malaysia and Indonesia.  And one of the few places to get it around here is at Singapore’s Banana Leaf at the Farmer’s Market on Third and Fairfax in Los Angeles.  So, after everything we had already done, we got in the 300C (our fourth and final – and face it, the most awesome – form of transportation that day) and headed up to LA for some deliciousness.

What a great day.  I think I like this Father’s Day business a lot.  Thanks Tiger and Ruby for making it such a great day!

Mother’s Day Picnic at the Korean Friendship Bell

Today was a lovely day for a picnic. We decided to head over to the Korean Bell of Friendship in San Pedro for a great view, open fields of grass and of course, the pretty main attraction.

I love our growing tradition of Mothers Day picnics (check out our gorgeous picnic from last year!), because a) there are no crowds, b) the sun on our backs makes it feel like summer is here and c) it just feels great to be outdoors! Ed bought all my faves … pita, hummus, strawberries, and even some yummy little snickerdoodles. Perfection.

I love my little family.

Yeah, how can I not feel like the luckiest momma in the world when THIS little girl is the one I can call mine?!?

Shortbread Cookies for Mother’s Day

These tea bag cookies have been all over the internet lately, and as soon as I saw them on Pinterest, I knew I’d have to make them. The ones I’d seen online were beautiful of course, but I just felt the need to put my own fun + lighthearted “mommy” twist on them. They were more labor intensive than I’d anticipated, but I think they were well worth the trouble!

What made these really special to make was the fact that I made them with my mom. I love to bake treats, but I have a lot to learn from my mom — who fortunately, is always willing to help me (no matter how ambitious the project). The biggest challenge for me as a perfectionist was learning how to roll the dough evenly and get the thickness the same throughout. Big thanks to my mom is due for giving me the essential tips!

I’m a sucker for details, so I tried to make the tags as awesome as possible. I was too last minute to find the clear favor boxes I wanted to package the set of six cookies in, so I ended up packaging them in clear cellophane treat bags with wraphia and a “you’re awesome, momma!” treat bag tag.

I just wanted to pay homage to all of the awesome momma friends I’m fortunate enough to know, and if I could find a way to mass produce these suckers without driving myself crazy, I’d make a batch for every awesome momma I know! It’s going to be fun to see all the different variations on these as they pop up online post-Mother’s Day. This is a really great tutorial on how to make them yourself if you’d like to try!

Happy Baking! (and Happy Mother’s Day!)
