7-8 Months

I’ve been a very bad mommy. I missed our 7 month update, and we’ve only got about a week of our 8 month left! But with so much change happening these days – it’s tough to keep up! As I try and think about what’s all changed, I struggle to not take the easy route and just say “EVERYTHING!” But here’s what I have come up with …

*She has hair – lots of hair! Now, we have to brush it when she wakes up in the morning and a few times during the day. My favorite part? She can wear a bow in her hair just like me now!

*She is scooting. And even crawling, kinda. Anything set just outside of reach can be motivation to get moving. All I have to do is set a piece of junk mail on the floor, and she can scoot/crawl right over to get it almost immediately. Curiosity is definitely the name of the game!

*She likes to stand up! Daddy keeps encouraging “cruising” along the couch or the bed while she stands on her feet (but I keep telling him all in good time! ha). This girl loves to stand up. Some have even said she’d probably skip the whole crawling around thing and just start walkin’. We’ll see about that. So far, it’s just too cute watching her stand on those skinny little legs while she looks so proud of herself.

*She feeds herself (sometimes). Our girl definitely prefers the finger foods over purees, so we have been experimenting with baby- led weaning which, in a nutshell, encourages a baby to feed themselves small bits of solid food themselves. We cut up pieces of banana or potato, quarter up grapes, give chunks of avocado and let her snack on her favorite – Cheerios. As she develops (and we get braver), we work up to things like cooked pasta, small bites of soft cooked vegetables and more. She still loves her sweet potatoes and carrots in a jar, but she is really digging on things off our plates. We’re excited about building up a diverse and healthy palate for her!

And now for some stats…

Height/weight: We plopped her down on our bathroom scale the other morning and it read 16.2 lbs.! She seems to be on the petite side these days as she is still wearing 6 month size clothes. We’ll get more info at her 9 month well baby appt. coming up in August.

*Waving bye-bye
*Eating cheerios
*Petting Ricki

We’ll leave you with a short video clip showing Miss Ruby on her feet, standing, smiling and giggling:

6 Months

Ruby is a half-year old! So hard to believe she is 6 months already, but also so hard to remember life without her. There have been so many changes in her 6 month that its almost like we have a new baby … she acts different, looks different, plays different and even eats different! One thing has stayed the same though – she’s still the best baby in the entire world.

Ruby’s current stats
(as of her 6-month well baby appointment):
14 lbs., 11 oz.
(50th percentile, average)
27.5 in. long
(75th percentile, doc said she’s a “long & lean healthy machine”)

Current likes:
Making a mess Eating in the highchair
Cruising in the stroller while mommy & daddy run
Drinking out of her sippy cup
Slapping Petting the kitty

Current dislikes:

Notable events:
*Started solid foods! She didn’t really like that icky rice cereal, but she’s loved carrots, squash and especially sweet potatoes so far.
*Sitting up on her own now.
*We have TEETH! Two bottom teeth cut through at the end of this month.
*A visit to Tanaka Farms for Strawberry Picking
*A visit to the Museum of Contemporary Art
*Celebrated Mother’s Day with not only Mommy, but Grandma and Halmoni as well
*Went swimming for the very 1st time at cousin Mikayla’s birthday party

Another important breakthrough this month was finally getting over whatever fear she had of her two Grandpas! Both Ed & I felt terrible that everytime Ruby saw Papaw or Harabuji she would cry … and we know it was breaking their hearts. So in honor of this great change – and proof that she really enjoys them both – here is a very happy Ruby with her Harabuji and her Papaw!

And, just because it never gets old, here’s a little clip of Ruby on her way to doing one of her favorite things:

5 Months

(Shame on us – we are writing this 5 month recap on the day of her 6 month birthday!)

If we could sum up this month in one word, it would be FUN. Ruby is just cracking us up these days! She is so animated (and so opinionated!) already – it’s amazing. She giggles … she plays … she melts our hearts.

Ruby’s current stats:
We will find out more at her 6 month appointment, but she’s wearing her 3-6 months clothes and size 2 diapers (definitely a step up!)

Current likes:
*BATHTIME!
*Cruising around in her stroller while Mommy & Daddy do their evening run.
*Rolling … and rolling … and rolling!
She rolls in every direction, all across the room (and underneath tables!)
*Singing “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes” and “Itsy Bitsy Spider”
*Petting the kitty

Current dislikes:
*Being in the car seat (still)
*Not being paid your full, undivided attention
*Taking afternoon naps

Notable Events:
*Participating in her 1st 5K!
*Visiting the Long Beach Aquarium of the Pacific
*Sitting up on her own (for a few seconds)
*1st Easter
*Attending birthday parties for her friends Violet, Indy & Justin

Of course, Easter was a big celebration this year. We celebrated with my family the day before and Ruby had a ton of fun with all of her cousins:

She loves her Auntie Shirley & Uncle Eric:

And of course, she was spoiled by Grandma & Papaw and got her very 1st Easter Basket with all kinds of goodies!

On Easter morning, we helped Ruby discover her basket left by the Easter Bunny! Of course, she was way more into the plastic eggs that were inside as opposed to anything else. :)

Did the Easter Bunny leave those Peeps for Ruby … or Mommy?

Daddy shows Ruby the jar of baby food in her basket (someone’s starting solids now!)

The celebrations just kept on coming, as Halmoni came to visit next.
Halmoni can’t resist buying Ruby gifts …

And they’re always pretty dresses!

We feel like huge jerks, but later that day, we ended the holiday by having dinner with Harabuji – and we forgot to bring the camera. :( We will post pics of Ruby with her Harabuji next time, we promise!

And finally, Ruby sure is working on her crawl these days. The video is kinda long, but you can see at about 35 seconds how she’s pulling her knees forward and trying to scoot. If you like cute babies that reach for toys, you will like this video.

4 Months

It’s been quite a 4th month for Lil’ Miss Ruby – but she’s been a real trooper! Poor thing got sick for the first time and had to deal with a pretty nasty respiratory virus. We’re pretty confident there’s nothing sadder than a baby with a mask over her face breathing in medicine from an inhaler, but she was so brave and strong, and is now back to being amazingly cute (and healthy) full-time. :)

In addition to icky sickness, Ruby has also been experiencing the joys of teething! We have no idea when the 1st pearly whites will make their grand appearance, but this kid drools like a faucet and will chomp down on anything within reaching distance! Let’s all send some requests to the Tooth Fairy for Ruby, and hope that she cuts a few teeth sooner than later to end the discomfort! In the meantime, Ruby has made a new friend – Sophie la Giraffe! Sophie is an adorable French giraffe made of rubber that she can chew on to her hearts’ content. We rookie parents had no idea about the Sophie phenomenon whatsoever until just recently. Apparently, Sophie’s big among teething babies everywhere around the world – (since 1961 even!), and she’s cute too! Ruby really seems to love her!

Also big in month #4 is all the action this girl is up to! Rolling over back to front – or front to back – she’s got it down now, and this girl can move! This picture was taken the day she finally realized we had a little mirror in her crib. It was too perfect, I had snuck in to check on her after a nap one day. Lots of happy chatter and sounds, and then silence! I looked in and she was just staring at herself in the mirror! She was so entranced that I had time to run and get the camera and snap pics before she moved!

So on to some monthly stats …

Ruby’s current stats (as of her 4-month well baby appointment):
14 lbs. even and 25.5 in. long
(This puts her at the 60th percentile, which is slightly above average)

Current likes:
Walking around with Daddy in the Baby Bjorn
Sophie la Girafe :)
Going to MyGym
Singing “Zoom Zoom” and “Itsy Bitsy Spider”

Current dislikes:
Being in the car seat (still)
Getting out of the bath tub

Notable events:
Starting Mommy & Me classes with other babies born Oct/Nov 2010
Celebrating Halmoni’s birthday at the Korean Restaurant
First time getting sick (boo!)

So that’s a wrap on our 4 month recap. With Ruby & Mommy both getting sick – we missed out on some photo ops and fun things to report – but lots of big things are coming up in Month 5, which starts this Saturday! Can’t believe how quickly it’s all happening!
